The Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre is a planned multi-use indoor sports and community facility within the Moreton Bay Central precinct in Queensland. The project forms part of the infrastructure programme supporting the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The facility is intended to operate as both a Games venue and a long-term community asset, supporting organised sport, events and community use beyond 2032. It will host indoor sporting events during the Games.

The project is being delivered by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA). City of Moreton Bay Council is the owner and future operator of the facility and is responsible for early site works.

Location and connectivity

The project is located within the Moreton Bay Central precinct, on the site of the former Petrie Paper Mill, and adjacent to Petrie train station. The site has undergone remediation following its decommissioning. The indoor sports centre will occupy a portion of the wider precinct.

The development has been referred under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, with environmental considerations forming part of the planning process.

Architecture and design

Populous is the Principal Architect for the project. The design approach responds to the local landscape and climatic conditions, with a focus on natural light and ventilation.

The concept integrates indoor and outdoor environments, incorporating green spaces alongside the built facility. Outdoor areas are intended to support community use alongside the indoor sports programme.

The design is expected to be completed by 2027.

Facilities, capacity and amenities

The centre will include 12 multi-use indoor courts designed to support sports such as basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal, pickleball and wheelchair rugby.

The venue is designed with a capacity of up to 10,000 visitors during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Supporting facilities include a café, athlete amenities, players’ change rooms, meeting rooms and more than 300 car parking spaces.

Outdoor green spaces form part of the overall programme, allowing for additional recreational and community use. The layout is designed to accommodate sporting events, entertainment activities and community functions.

Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre construction

The City of Moreton Bay Council has commenced early enabling works on site in preparation for construction. The project is currently in the planning and design phase.

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027, with the venue being developed for completion in time for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Contractors involved

Populous has been appointed as Principal Architect for the project in March 2026. Engineering services are being provided by Aurecon, an Australian engineering, project management and consulting company, and Northrop Consulting Engineers.

SYNC Advisory, with support from subconsultants including Leisa Prowse Consulting, provided advisory services including development of the Project Validation Report, stakeholder engagement, input into venue design, and delivery model and contracting strategy.
