Between the concert hall and the arena lies a scale of performance space that many cities lack. The Kansas City Symphony’s latest project aligns with this emerging demand, with Populous appointed as lead designer for a new indoor venue designed to accommodate up to 4,600 people.
Scheduled to open in 2028, the facility is intended to host touring artists across genres while supporting Symphony performances that require amplified production formats, expanding the range of experiences the organisation can present.

Calibrating scale between hall and arena
At 4,600 seats, the venue aligns with a range for which demand is growing among artists and audiences. It offers sufficient scale for national touring acts while maintaining a more intimate audience experience.
The venue is intended to offer flexibility across different performance formats, accommodating touring productions, cross-genre events and Symphony programmes within a single configuration.
Integrating orchestra, amplification and film

The project includes the integration of audiovisual systems within the venue design. The venue is intended to support performances where live orchestral music is combined with film, a format that continues to rank among the Symphony’s most in-demand offerings.
The venue is designed to support both amplified and orchestral performance conditions, alongside productions that combine live music with visual media.

Extending the Symphony’s spatial footprint
The new venue does not replace the Symphony’s existing home at Helzberg Hall within the Kauffman Center. Instead, it introduces an additional venue with a different performance format.
The Symphony will continue its schedule of more than 100 annual performances at the Kauffman Center, while the new facility is expected to host over 100 events a year. The majority of these will feature popular touring artists, alongside a smaller number of Symphony performances adapted to the venue’s format.

Positioning a venue within an active urban fabric
The project is located in Kansas City’s South Plaza area, within walking distance of the Country Club Plaza and surrounded by a mix of restaurants, retail and nightlife.
With an expected annual footfall exceeding 300,000 visitors, the building is set to function as a major anchor destination within the district. Its presence contributes to the broader revitalisation already underway in one of Kansas City’s most established areas.
The Kansas City Symphony will own the venue and has appointed Music and Event Management, Inc. to operate it. Populous will work alongside Kansas City-based McCownGordon, which will lead construction.
