Palermo unveils Populous-designed stadium blending city, landscape and community

Palermo FC, the Italian football club based in Sicily, has unveiled design proposals for the redevelopment of the Renzo Barbera Stadium, marking a further step in its long-running plan to modernise the historic venue.

The plans have been developed with Populous, and set out a wider ambition to reposition the stadium as part of the city’s daily urban fabric rather than a standalone sports facility.

A stadium conceived as part of the city fabric

At the centre of the redevelopment is the intention to reposition the stadium as an integrated part of Palermo’s urban environment rather than a self-contained venue. The design approach emphasises continuous public use, with new open spaces, amenities, and services intended to support daily activity across the year.

Palermo FC has described the project as part of a wider ambition to strengthen the relationship between the stadium and its surrounding neighbourhood, supporting social interaction and contributing to urban regeneration around the Renzo Barbera Stadium.

Design focuses on experience, landscape and heritage

The architectural concept introduces a reconfigured seating bowl that brings spectators closer to the pitch, with fully covered terraces. Hospitality areas, expanded food and beverage facilities, and dedicated event spaces form part of the broader fan infrastructure, alongside improved accessibility features across all levels.

The redevelopment also emphasises preserving the stadium’s long-standing relationship with its setting. For nearly a century, the venue has been closely associated with the surrounding Favorita Park and views towards Monte Pellegrino, both of which are being retained as defining elements of the site’s identity. The design aims to integrate these landscape references while introducing contemporary stadium architecture.

Multifunctional role and long-term urban use

Beyond football, the stadium is planned as a multifunctional venue capable of hosting international matches, including UEFA competitions, as well as concerts and cultural events. The intention is to position the facility as a year-round destination capable of supporting a wider event economy for the city.

Alongside the main stadium structure, the project includes a new adjacent building that will house Palermo FC’s headquarters, incorporating offices, a museum, and dedicated spaces for supporters and guests. This addition is designed to extend the club’s physical presence beyond matchday operations.

Sustainability and infrastructure integration

The redevelopment incorporates a series of environmental and mobility measures, including photovoltaic systems, rainwater harvesting systems, and resource-efficient technologies to reduce operational impact. The surrounding public realm is planned to support lower-emission transport options, including pedestrian access, cycling routes, public transport integration, and electric vehicle infrastructure, alongside landscaped and permeable surfaces.

According to the project team, the broader objective is to move the stadium towards greater operational efficiency and reduced environmental dependency over time, while maintaining its role as a central civic asset within Palermo.

The design has been submitted as part of ongoing administrative procedures with regional and national authorities, as the club continues to advance the project in coordination with public institutions.
