Nobu Hospitality announced plans to open a hotel, restaurant, villas, and branded residences at Monte Rei in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve.

The development is part of a wider investment programme led by real estate investment manager Norfin, covering hospitality, residential, and leisure facilities across the resort. A beach club is planned for a later phase.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the hotel anticipated to open in 2029. The Monte Rei project would become Nobu’s second destination in Portugal.

The hotel will contain 100 rooms and suites, a signature Nobu restaurant, and guest amenities. The plans also provide for 21,000m² of Nobu villas and branded residences, although the number of homes has not been disclosed.

Monte Rei extends across more than 1,000 acres of countryside in the Eastern Algarve. Its existing facilities are centred on the North Course, which opened in 2007 as Portugal’s first Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. The resort has developed a residential community alongside its golf and leisure facilities over almost two decades.

The Nobu development will add a hotel and branded residential component to Monte Rei, which has built much of its international profile around golf.

The project follows Arrow Global’s acquisition of Monte Rei in January 2025 and is among the investments planned for the resort. Norfin, which has been owned by Arrow Global since 2018, is leading the new hospitality and residential phase, while leisure management company Details, backed by Arrow, oversees the resort.

DSA Architects and Rockwell Group appointed

DSA Architects and architecture and design practice Rockwell Group have been appointed to design the development. Rockwell Group is a long-standing design partner of Nobu.

The architects will work across the hotel, restaurant, villas, and residences, with the designs drawing on the landscape and regional character of the Eastern Algarve. The announcement did not provide further architectural details.

Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, said the resort’s landscape, privacy, golf course, and residential community were among the reasons for choosing Monte Rei.

Miguel Mateus, CEO of Norfin, said the partnership would support the next phase of investment at Monte Rei, including the hotel, restaurant, branded homes, and further leisure facilities.
