Who builds the next AEC tools? Bentley moves earlier into the startup pipeline

At the NXT BLD conference in London, Bentley Systems and NXT BLD announced NXT Activate, a developer-focused accelerator aimed at early-stage companies building software for the built and natural environment. The programme is intended to support startups working on applications that address persistent issues in the sector, particularly fragmented data and disconnected workflows across design, construction and operations.

The launch reflects a wider shift in how infrastructure software firms are engaging with early-stage innovation. Instead of waiting for startups to mature and then integrating their tools, platform providers are increasingly trying to position themselves closer to the point where ideas are first developed and tested.

NXT Activate is backed by Bentley Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Bentley Systems, with up to $3m committed over three years. The funding will be allocated across cohorts of six to eight startups, with the first expected to begin in autumn 2026. It is designed to expand over time with additional sponsors and investment partners.

Startups selected for the programme may receive up to $200,000 in exchange for equity. Alongside funding, they will be given access to technical support, domain expertise and introductions to potential users across the infrastructure sector. The programme also includes integration support with Bentley’s iTwin platform, as well as visibility through NXT BLD and related industry events.

There is no restriction on technology stack. The accelerator is open to startups building on both open standards such as IFC and 3D Tiles, and on proprietary platforms.

Investment decisions will be made by a committee drawn from founding and investment members of the programme. NXT BLD and AEC Magazine will retain editorial independence, according to the announcement.

For startups, the appeal is less about the size of the funding and more about access. The programme offers early contact with contractors, engineers and infrastructure owners who are often difficult for young companies to reach directly.

Applications are expected to open in summer 2026, with the first 16-week programme designed to take selected teams from early development towards commercial readiness through technical integration and user feedback.

Bentley’s move extends its engagement with early-stage startups in the AEC sector. The programme combines funding with technical support, platform integration and access to potential enterprise users across the infrastructure industry.
