Forum Deutsche Sprache: Mannheim’s new hub for language and dialogue

A new cultural and research landmark is taking shape in the German city of Mannheim with the Forum Deutsche Sprache, set to become a hub where language, science, and society converge. Construction officially began yesterday, with a symbolic groundbreaking and foundation stone ceremony. The building’s design, proposed by HENN, was chosen as the winning entry in a 2021 architectural competition, reflecting a vision that blends interactive research with public engagement. Completion is planned for 2028.

The Forum is being developed with the support of the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and will occupy a key location at Alter Messplatz in the northern part of Mannheim’s Neckarstadt district. Positioned between the square and the Neckar River, the site allows the building to create a dialogue between interior spaces and the surrounding cityscape.

A hybrid space for science, research, and public interaction

The Forum Deutsche Sprache is conceived as part museum, part science centre, and part public forum. The Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache (Leibniz Institute for the German Language) will use the building as both a research hub and an exhibition space. Visitors will be able to explore interactive presentations, attend readings and science events, and contribute to ongoing linguistic research through spoken or written “language donations.”

The building’s layout is designed to encourage engagement. A fully glazed lobby opens onto the Meßplatz square, creating a floating space between the interior and exterior. This area will serve as a meeting point for visitors, employees, and local residents alike, supporting a sense of openness and connection. Outdoor areas, including a publicly accessible picnic zone, extend the Forum’s reach into the surrounding urban environment, reinforcing its role as a civic space for dialogue and learning.

Architectural design mirrors language complexity

The three-storey structure features a multilayered façade that reflects the complexity of language. A transparent ETFE outer shell encloses wooden elements and a robust concrete framework, creating a balance between openness and structure. Inside, beams and columns divide the exhibition floors into distinct zones, each representing a different “language world.”

The building incorporates open-plan exhibition areas and office spaces for researchers, integrating research and visitor experience in a single setting. A rooftop terrace provides panoramic views of the Neckar River and the Mannheim skyline, while the interior design facilitates a gradual journey from the third floor down to the ground level, allowing visitors to experience the evolution, diversity, and social impact of language.

The Forum Deutsche Sprache aims to add a new cultural dimension to Neckarstadt, offering a platform for exploration, discussion, and learning. Through its design, programming, and public spaces, the building is positioned as a place where language and society meet, fostering connections across generations and communities.
